Bitten Shifter by Brogan Thomas is far from a bad book by any means, but it's also not a great book. I found a lot of this book to be very underwhelming. I didn't know before I read this that this would be a fated mates trope book, and I have to be honest, as a 35-year-old woman, that trope comes off as childish. It's love without the most important factors, such as finding someone whose values align with yours, someone you have sexual and intellectual chemistry with, and someone you slowly get to know over time, someone you build a real bond with that's rooted in deep love, passion, understanding, and compassion. To me, it's just not interesting; I find it to be kind of unimaginative.

Lark is a 47 year old divorcee who is attacked while working for shifters and finds herself permanently transfigured. I was hoping with a character who is older than typical that she would have a breadth of character, history, and emotions. She is introduced to a wide cast of characters who are somewhat likable but never quite feel authentic or real. They are just supporting characters that can't stand on their own.

I found the basic plot interesting but it lacked any sort of depth and nuance. I was hoping for an in-depth character analysis of a 47 year old who goes from sad middle-aged woman to a hot, much younger woman with shapeshifter abilities as well as new strengths as she learns to adjust to her new body and circumstances. If you were looking for the same, you will not find that here. If you're looking for a vivid and compelling werewolf novel with a female main character I suggest Bitten by Kelley Armstrong. It also has a fated mates sort of trope but the relationship dynamics are a much more interesting. Aside from the boring romance and the lack of effusive characters or interesting world building, I also found the final battle to be completely rushed and underwhelming.

The best I can say is that it's entertaining and a real page turner, I'll admit I was compelled to read more most of the time but I ultimately found it lacking everywhere that counts. The best part of this book is the cover which is never what a writer wants to hear.
